Holistic Modalities
The Safe and Sound Protocol
Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is an evidence-based listening therapy designed to help listeners experience better connection with themselves, others, and the world around them. The SSP involves listening to specially-filtered music through headphones alongside a provider, in-person or remotely. A practical application of Polyvagal Theory, the science of feeling safe, the SSP acts as an acoustic vagal nerve stimulator, helping individuals to shift out of a chronic state of defense and into a state of social engagement.
Who is the Safe and Sound Protocol for?
The SSP is beneficial for anyone who feels stuck in patterns of overwhelm, stress, and disconnection from themselves and those around them. SSP may be supportive for people who are:
-Recovering from medical or relational trauma
– Experiencing sensory sensitivities and becoming overwhelmed by the surrounding environment
– Navigating difficult life transitions such as grief and loss.
-Living with chronic Illness and/or pain
What does the Safe and Sound Protocol do and not do?
The SSP is an adjunct therapy designed to work with other modalities. The SSP is not therapy and is not a standalone intervention; it is designed to accelerate results alongside other modalities. For this reason, it is strongly recommended that clients work with a therapist while completing the SSP.
How is the Safe and Sound Protocol delivered?
-The SSP is typically delivered through over-the-ear headphones; if this is not accessible, other options are available.
– The SSP can be delivered in-person or remotely in a quiet environment
-The SSP is a 5-hour series that is delivered slowly, typically a few minutes at a time, over the course of several weeks. With the SSP, less is more, and going slowly allows the nervous system’s capacity to be stretched rather than stressed.
Reiki
Reiki is a subtle, energetic healing modality that gently promotes a person’s natural ability to heal. Originating in Japan, Reiki supports physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being by promoting balance across all systems. During a Reiki session, the recipient wears loose, comfortable clothing, and the practitioner uses light touch or places their hands just above the body to help facilitate the flow of energy.
The healing experienced during a Reiki session is unique to each individual and may include physical relief, emotional release, or a sense of spiritual connection and ease. Many people report reduced pain, deep relaxation, or the gentle release of stored emotions. Reiki sessions are adaptable and can be modified to accommodate a person’s specific needs, comfort level, and current circumstances.
